Arizona Cancer Center
The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson is one of three medical schools in Arizona that grants MD degrees. Affiliated with the University of Arizona, it is located on the University of Arizona Health Sciences center on the University of Arizona’s campus and is governed by the Arizona Board of Regents.
The school traditionally only accepted Arizona residents for admission, but starting in the 2009-2010 incoming class, it changed its policy to allow for the admission of highly-qualified non-residents. In 2012, a branch campus in Phoenix became an independent medical school.
The University of Arizona Cancer Center has a long history of contributing to cancer research and treatment. The Cancer Center was established in 1976 as a division within the University of Arizona College of Medicine and was awarded its first National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant in 1978. The Cancer Center was designated “comprehensive” in 1990.
The Cancer Center has been led by several prominent figures in the field, including Sydney Salmon, MD (1976-1999), Daniel Von Hoff, MD, David Alberts, MD, and Andrew S. Kraft, MD. The Cancer Center has been continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute through its Cancer Center Support Grant and has expanded to include a facility in Phoenix.
