Maimonides Medical Center
The Maimonides Medical Center is a non-profit, non-sectarian hospital based in Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York. It is a 711-bed treatment facility and academic medical center, offering over 70 primary care and sub-specialty programs. As of August 1, 2016, the center is an adult and pediatric trauma center, and Brooklyn’s only pediatric trauma center.
The hospital has a long history, beginning in 1911 as the New Utrecht Dispensary, and later merging with other small dispensaries to form the Israel Hospital of Brooklyn in 1919. In 1920, the Israel Hospital merged with the Zion Hospital to form United Israel Zion Hospital, which later became Israel Zion Hospital. The Maimonides Medical Center was formed through a merger of United Israel Zion Hospital and Beth Moses Hospital in 1947 and was named after Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, a 12th-century Jewish philosopher and doctor.
