Mercy Hospital

Northern Light Mercy Hospital is a not-for-profit community hospital located in Portland, Maine. It was founded in 1918 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and the Sisters of Mercy with the goal of providing excellent healthcare, particularly to the poor and disadvantaged. The hospital is located on a 42-acre campus overlooking the Fore River. The hospital’s history began as Queen’s Hospital, which was established in response to the 1918 flu pandemic after city hospitals refused Irish Catholic patients during that pandemic.

In 1941, the hospital was renamed to Mercy Hospital and moved to a new location with 150 beds. Over the years, the hospital expanded and underwent renovations and in 2013 it was acquired by Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. In 2018, EMHS rebranded as Northern Light Health and the hospital began doing business as Northern Light Mercy Hospital. In January 2022, the hospital permanently closed their State Street location and moved all operations to their Fore River campus, marking the final step in their consolidation efforts.
