Swedish Medical Center

Swedish Health Services is the largest nonprofit health provider in the Seattle metropolitan area, operating five hospital campuses, ambulatory care centers and a network of over 100 primary-care and specialty clinics. It was founded in 1910 by Dr. Nils August Johanson as Seattle’s first modern nonprofit medical facility. The center has expanded over the years, starting with its First Hill campus, and then merging with Seattle General Hospital and Doctors Hospital in 1978, and later purchasing Ballard Community Hospital in 1992 and Providence Seattle Medical Center in 2000.

Swedish also expanded outside Seattle and King County by leasing Stevens Hospital in Edmonds in 2010 and opening a new campus in Issaquah in 2011. The center is affiliated with many other health care providers in Washington state, and had 8,886 employees and 6,023 credentialed physicians as of 2013.
