Temple Health Lung Center
Temple Health, also known as Temple University Health System, is a non-profit academic healthcare network based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The healthcare network serves Pennsylvania and its flagship hospital is Temple University Hospital, a safety net hospital located in Philadelphia. The network is also affiliated with the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, where research activities are carried out. The network has its roots in 1891, when Samaritan Hospital was founded by Grace Baptist of Philadelphia and its leader Russell Conwell.
The hospital outgrew its accommodations, and the church built a much-needed addition, promptly paid for by the church offerings. Garretson Hospital was also founded in 1878. These hospitals were eventually absorbed by Temple University, becoming part of the Temple University Health System. The network was created as a separate entity from Temple University in 1994, and includes affiliated hospitals such as Fox Chase Cancer Center, Jeanes Hospital, and the Episcopal Campus of Temple University Hospital.
Northeastern Hospital was also part of the network, but has since faced severe cuts to its services. Temple University Children’s Medical Center, which was built after the formation of the health system in 1994, also closed its doors in 2007. The network also operates Temple Physicians, a network of physician practices across the Greater Philadelphia Area.
