University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public research university located in Birmingham, Alabama. It was established in 1936 as an academic extension center, before becoming a four-year campus in 1966 and a fully autonomous university in the University of Alabama System in 1969.
UAB offers a wide range of programs in various fields such as social and behavioral sciences, liberal arts, business, education, engineering, and health-related fields. The University has a large student population of 22,080 students from over 110 countries.
UAB is also home to the UAB Health System, one of the largest academic medical centers in the United States, which is affiliated with the university. The UAB Health System sponsors residency programs in various medical specialties such as internal medicine, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, surgery, radiology, and anesthesiology. The University is the state’s largest single employer, with over 23,000 faculty and staff and over 53,000 jobs. An estimated 10% of the jobs in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area and 1 in 31 jobs in the state of Alabama are directly or indirectly related to UAB. The university’s overall annual economic impact was estimated to be $7.15 billion in 2017.
In 2013, UAB launched a fundraising campaign called The Campaign for UAB, with a goal of raising $1 billion. The campaign received over $420 million in donations before the public launch. In 2018, UAB exceeded its goal of raising $1 billion, making it the most ambitious fundraising effort in the university’s history. The campaign received the largest single gift ever made to UAB, $30 million from O’Neal Industries and its shareholders to name the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB.
