Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is a public health sciences university in Little Rock, Arkansas that is part of the University of Arkansas System. It includes six colleges, seven institutes, multiple research centers, a network of community education centers, and the UAMS Medical Center. It was established in 1879 by eight physicians who purchased a building on West Second Street in Little Rock to house the school and opened with 22 students.

The medical school building was later moved to a new location next to the City Hospital in Little Rock. UAMS combines education and patient care resources with specialized care and research at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. In 2007, the cancer research center was renamed in honor of the late Winthrop P. Rockefeller and a major expansion was completed in 2010.
