Yale New Haven Health Smilow Cancer Hospital

Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) is a large hospital located in New Haven, Connecticut. It is owned and operated by the Yale New Haven Health System, and includes the Smilow Cancer Hospital, the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and the Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. The hospital is the primary teaching hospital for Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Nursing.

It is a Magnet hospital, accredited by the Joint Commission, and is a Level I trauma center for adult and pediatric patients. In 2021, the hospital was ranked nationally in 8 of 15 specialties by U.S. News & World Report, including psychiatry, geriatrics, diabetes and endocrinology, pulmonology, neurology and neurosurgery, kidney disorders, gastroenterology, ear, nose, and throat, and gynecology.

The hospital had more than 1.3 million outpatient visits, 128,382 emergency room visits, and 68,894 inpatient discharges in 2020. It is one of the largest employers in New Haven, Connecticut, with 14,592 employees. The Smilow Cancer Hospital was opened in 2009, and is affiliated with Yale Cancer Center. The hospital has been involved in several expansions, construction, and renovations over the years, including the addition of the Smilow Cancer Hospital, the Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, and a six-story building at 55 Park Street. The Cancer Center building was named in honor of Joel E. and Joan Smilow’s large gift to the cancer hospital.
