About Gregory A. Otterson

Gregory A Otterson is a thoracic oncologist who specializes in advancing the care and treatment of patients with thoracic malignancies such as adenocarcinoma, mesothelioma and thymic cancers. He is dedicated to developing novel therapeutic approaches to these diseases, including combinations of conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy, novel targeted agents and immunotherapy applied to patients with early stage or advanced disease.

He has been named to the Castle Connolly list of “Regional Top Doctors” from 2006 to 2019, and rated in the top 10 percent of physicians in the nation for patient satisfaction in 2017. Dr. Otterson is a professor of internal medicine, associate division director for education in the Division of Medical Oncology, associate program director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program and clinical director of the Thoracic Oncology Disease Specific Research Group at the OSUCCC – James. He also serves on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) non-small cell lung cancer guidelines panel.

Dr. Otterson's research focus is on genetic and epigenetic changes in lung cancers, and his goal is to understand which patients will best respond to specific therapeutic maneuvers. One of his recent studies revealed that patients with fewer than four brain metastases from non-small cell lung cancer or breast cancer who only had stereotactic radiosurgery survived longer than patients who had whole-brain radiation therapy. He has co-authored many articles that have appeared in well-respected journals such as Clinical Lung Cancer, Cancer, Molecular Cancer and Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The Ohio State Brain and Spine Hospital is home to a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of thoracic oncology specialists, including medical oncologists, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, pathologists, radiologists, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Our goal is to continuously improve patients' quality of life and develop effective therapies to end cancer.

He has received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, completed an internship in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian-St.Luke's Med Ctr, residency in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian-St.Luke's Med Ctr, and fellowship in medical oncology at National Cancer Institute. He currently practices at Ohio State Brain and Spine Hospital, located at 300 West 10th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43210.
