About Joel Baumgartner

Dr. Joel Baumgartner is a surgical oncologist with expertise in treating gastrointestinal and peritoneal cancers, including mesothelioma and carcinomatosis. He uses the "chemo bath" or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) technique to treat tumors that have spread to the abdomen. He also specializes in the surgical treatment of melanoma and conducts clinical trials in HIPEC, melanoma, and immunotherapy.

Dr. Baumgartner is an assistant professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he teaches medical students, residents, and fellows. He completed his surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, residency at the University of Colorado, and earned his medical degree from Indiana University. He is a member of several professional societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. His location is at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.
