About Matthew Schuchert

He holds the title of Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Program Director of Thoracic Surgery Independent Fellowship and Integrated Residency Programs in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He received his BS from Yale University in 1990 and his MD from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1994. He completed his surgical training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, including an internship, junior and senior residencies, and fellowships in Minimally Invasive Thoracic and Foregut Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society, American Association of Immunologists, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, and The Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association. He is also a guest reviewer for several journals, including Annals of Thoracic Surgery, British Journal of Cancer, Diseases of the Esophagus, JCTVS, Surgical Endoscopy, World Journal of Gastroenterology, and World Journal of Surgery.
His research interests include the study of T cell and Dendritic Cell subsets and their roles in donor-specific transplantation tolerance and anti-tumor immunity, with a focus on understanding how immune status influences outcomes in lung cancer and how immunomodulation can be achieved to augment host responses to tumors.
